This gold medal depicting the iron mines in Monte Leone was minted in this version under Pope Urban VIII only in an edition of 132 pieces. Under his pontificate, some iron deposits were found in an area of Spoleto called Monte Leone. A suitable plant was built for the extraction of the ore and the road to the Scheggia Pass was widened and suitably arranged for the easy transport of the material. The plant did not last long and only a few years later, under the pontificate of Alexander VIII, the mine ran out of the ore.
