These aurei with the image of Antonia the Younger were minted posthumously by her son Claudius after his accession to the throne. She was a popular and respected woman of the imperial house. Daughter of Antony and Octavia, she later married Nero Claudius Drusus and gave birth to Germanicus, Claudius and Livilla. Her life was marked by several tragedies and most of her children and grandchildren died during her lifetime. After her death, Claudius bestowed the title Augusta on his mother, and her birthday became a public holiday, with annual games and public sacrifices, and her statue paraded in a chariot.
